Anyone looking for a new show to get hooked on should look no further than Animal Kingdom on TNT. I actually came across the show by accident. I had been watching the NBA All-Star game, and after the final buzzer I went to get ready for bed. When I came back, Animal Kingdom was starting up. Even though I picked up the remote to turn off the television, I sat down after watching the first 30 seconds because it caught my attention. It was maybe eleven o’clock then, and before I even realized it, I was on the fifth episode and it was four o’clock in the morning.

The show follows a teenager who witnesses his mother’s overdose. He moves in with his estranged grandmother and uncles. However, he soon discovers that his estranged family comes with a lot more baggage than he was prepared to handle. As it turns out, his family is a successful, dangerous, and unforgiving crime family with a taste for a high that is satisfied through a variety of high risk and, quite simply, uncomfortable methods in respect to the main character. The show, which currently only has had one season, centers around the dealings of the family and how the main character manages to cope with the death of his mother, the dysfunction within the family, and gaining the trust of the family, which is somewhat distrustful of him to begin with.

Needless to say, Animal Kingdom is gripping and suspenseful. It seems like every episode ends on cliffhanger that’s more enthralling than the previous one. The second season begins on May 30th, and with the massive cliffhanger lingering from the end of the first season, the second season is sure to offer much more of (and surely an improvement on) the excitement and thrilling moments that were so abundant in the first.
